THE GARRAF PARK - A sensory tour of Garraf
El Garraf Park occupies more than half of the area, with nearly 12,376 hectares. It is a rugged landscape, of rounded and arid hills, of narrow dales and great ravines and white rock cliffs. La Morella (594 m) and El Rascler (572 m) are the highest peaks of this calcareous region, where the action of the water and air have constructed a formidable system of deep fissures, caves, karrens and dolines.
The vegetation and fauna are composed of species adapted to the harsh conditions of long hours of sun and the scarcity of superficial water, such as the reed, the agave, the prickly pear and the palmetto tree, but there are also holm oak forests and pine groves in the lowlands.
The fauna is rich and varied in reptiles and birds, among which we note the hunting eagle or Bonelli´s eagle, one of the most endangered predators in Catalonia. The Mediterranean tortoise, a species that was extinct in El Garraf, is regaining the habitat in this area. The few ponds are also important for the life of many species of invertebrates and of some amphibians, and the impressive karstic system has helped the presence of bats and of cave-dwelling animals, some of which belong to endemic species.
